Being cited by an AI: what actually changes

Traffic from assistants is 0.32% of the web. It has grown sixteenfold in two years.

Two stories circulate on this subject and both are wrong. The first says traditional search is dead and everything must be redone. The second says these are toys and there is nothing to do.

The published figures settle it, and they give a more interesting answer than either: traffic from assistants is tiny and it is growing very fast. Both are true at once, and it is the combination that dictates what to do.

This article explains what those figures actually measure, why the sources publishing them disagree with each other, and what can be done today — with no budget and no rebuild — to be the page an assistant cites rather than one of the ten it ignores.

There is no Algerian data on the subject. The figures below are global, and each chart says so.

The real size of the phenomenon

Start with the number that puts everything in place. According to figures published by Similarweb, AI platforms account for 0.32% of all web traffic in 2026. They accounted for 0.24% in 2025 and 0.02% in 2024.

Three tenths of one per cent. No business lives on that today, and anyone selling you a service by claiming otherwise is selling you a fear.

But look at the trajectory rather than the level: from 0.02 to 0.32 in two years is a sixteenfold increase. A curve that does that for two more years is no longer negligible, and the work to do today is the same work that will need to have been done by then.

One clarification about what that percentage measures, because it changes the reading: it counts visits sent to websites, not questions asked. The number of people who get their answer inside the assistant and click nowhere appears nowhere in that figure. The share of attention involved is therefore larger than 0.32%, and nobody knows by how much.

Who sends that traffic

The distribution is heavily concentrated. Of all referral traffic from assistants in 2026, Similarweb attributes 74.78% to ChatGPT, 11.56% to Gemini, 7.23% to Perplexity, 3.51% to Copilot and 2.62% to Claude.

One point is more instructive than the ranking: ChatGPT’s share is falling. It was 79.74% in 2025. The market is not concentrating further, it is beginning to spread.

The practical consequence is that optimising for one assistant in particular is a bad idea. What gets you cited by one gets you cited by the others, because they all read web pages, and a tactic aimed at a specific platform will expire at the rate these shares are moving.

It should be added that this distribution describes global traffic, where English dominates heavily. We found no measurement of the split in Algeria, neither for French-language queries nor Arabic ones. It is reasonable to assume the general hierarchy holds there, and unreasonable to assert the proportions are the same.

Why the sources disagree

Here is the point almost no article on the subject mentions, and it is the most useful one. The two main public sources give different numbers for the same thing: Similarweb puts ChatGPT’s share at 74.78% and Perplexity at 7.23%; SE Ranking gives 79.8% and 11.8%.

These are not errors. They are different methodologies — different panels, different definitions of what counts as a referral visit, different samples of sites. Neither is wrong and neither is the truth.

So take the order of magnitude and never the decimal. An article quoting you "79.8%" without saying where it came from, and without mentioning that another serious source says 74.78%, is giving you a precision that does not exist.

A practical consequence for reading any article on this subject, including this one: always ask what period it covers. These shares move several points in twelve months, which means a figure published two years ago describes a market that no longer exists. The date here is part of the data, not a footnote.

The traffic is small but it behaves differently

Volume is not the only thing to look at. Conversion rates recorded for this traffic are markedly above ordinary search traffic: 15.9% for visitors from ChatGPT, 10.5% for Perplexity, 5% for Claude.

The mechanism is easy to follow. Someone arriving through a link cited in an answer already has the substance of their information; if they click anyway, it is because they want to do something. They are not comparing ten tabs, they opened one.

That changes the arithmetic. Three hundred visitors converting at 15% are worth more than three thousand converting at 1%, and it is why 0.32% of traffic still deserves an afternoon of work.

A useful caveat before drawing an economic conclusion from these rates: they are calculated on very small volumes. A 15.9% conversion rate measured over a few hundred visits is an indication, not a constant, and it will probably fall as the channel widens and attracts less determined visitors. The direction is reliable; the level is not yet.

A method note for reading the two columns without error: they do not measure the same population of sites. A panel built from commerce sites and one built from publishing sites will never see the same share, because the questions leading to one do not resemble those leading to the other. The divergence is information about method, not somebody’s mistake.

What an assistant does with your page

An assistant does not rank pages, it composes an answer. It reads a number of sources, extracts what addresses the question asked, and cites the ones it actually used something from.

That shifts the unit of work. In classic search the unit is the page: it ranks whole. Here the unit is the passage: a single one of your sentences can be reused and credited, and the rest of the page can be ignored.

Hence the central rule behind everything that follows: write passages that answer a question completely, on their own, without the context of the preceding paragraph. It is also, incidentally, a better way to write for a human in a hurry.

This has an implication few businesses draw: the most useful page is not necessarily the best-ranked one. A long, well-ranked page in which no paragraph answers a question on its own will be read and ignored; a modest page holding three clear sentences on a precise point will be picked up. These are not the same qualities, and they do not exclude each other.

The shape that gets cited

A question as the section heading, and the answer in the two sentences that follow it. No introduction, no scene-setting, no "before answering, it is important to understand that". The answer first, the nuance afterwards.

Checkable facts rather than adjectives. "We are the sector leader" is extractable by nobody and nothing; "the online payment acceptance file runs in weeks rather than days" is, because it is a claim that can be true or false.

And figures with their source and their date, as in this article. That is what separates a citable passage from a plausible one, and it is exactly the standard a competent human reader applies.

A simple way to check that a passage is extractable: read it aloud imagining it is the whole answer. If you need to have read the previous sentence for it to make sense, it is not standalone. That test takes ten seconds per section and is more reliable than any tool sold for the purpose.

What stops your page being read

The first obstacle is technical and mundane: a page whose main content only appears after a script runs. Many crawlers read the document as it is served. If your text is not in it, it does not exist.

The second is a consent banner covering the content, or a redirect to a verification page. What obstructs a crawler obstructs classic engines too, which makes the fix pay twice.

The third is slowness, which closes the loop with another article on this blog. A page taking eight seconds to become readable is a page people abandon, and that holds for everything that comes to read it.

A fourth obstacle, less technical: content locked behind a form. A document that demands an email before letting itself be read is read by nobody except your prospects, which is sometimes exactly the intention — but you then need to know you have chosen never to be cited on that subject, rather than discovering it afterwards.

It should be added that this work has a shelf life. What is described here matches how these systems read pages today; that will change, and probably toward a finer reading rather than a coarser one. It is one more reason to write for a competent human reader: it is the only target that does not expire.

Markup, and what it does not do

Structured data — the markup declaring "this is a business, here is its address, this is a question and here is its answer" — helps resolve an ambiguity. It does not create authority and it does not get a page cited that says nothing.

It is most useful where the text alone is ambiguous: opening hours, prices, addresses, questions and answers. On an analytical page it adds almost nothing.

Do it because it is an hour of work and it serves classic search too, but do not put it at the top of the list. Markup on an empty page correctly describes an empty page.

Conversely, there is one case where markup does real work: questions and answers. A page where each question and each answer is explicitly declared as such gives the automated reader a structure it does not have to guess, and that is precisely the shape this section recommends adopting in the text. The two reinforce each other.

How to know whether you are being cited

There is no reliable, complete tool for this yet, and be wary of anyone claiming otherwise. What exists is more manual and is enough: ask several assistants the questions your customers actually ask, and look at what is cited.

Do it in your customers’ words, not yours. And redo it monthly: answers change, including for the same question asked twice.

Look at your traffic statistics too. Traffic from these platforms shows up there like any other referral source, at small volume; if it is zero while your competitors are being cited, you have your answer.

Finally, write your reference answers down somewhere, with the date. Without that history you will not be able to say whether your position is improving: answers change month to month for reasons that have nothing to do with you, and memory will mostly retain the time you were cited.

Look too at whether competitors are cited on questions you handle better than they do. That is the most actionable information this record produces: it does not tell you to write more, it tells you an existing page is not phrased so it can be picked up, which is a problem of form and takes an hour to fix.

What not to do

Do not rewrite your site for machines. The content that gets cited is clear, factual, dated content — that is, good content. Any tactic producing text a human finds unpleasant to read is a tactic that will be neutralised, and quickly.

Do not generate pages in bulk. Assistants cite sources they reuse something specific from; a hundred pages saying nothing specific produce none. They do degrade the whole site in the eyes of classic engines, which bring you the rest of your traffic.

And do not stop classic search work to do this. It is additional work on the same pages, not a replacement — 0.32% against everything else, the choice does not arise.

A fifth point, often proposed by suppliers: adding invisible text aimed at machines. Besides breaching the rules of every platform concerned, it is a tactic that assumes the automated reader is stupid. It is not, it gets better every quarter, and the site that bet on it will have to undo everything.

A commonsense point worth writing down: nothing above assumes writing for a machine. A page where each section answers a question in its first two sentences is simply a well-written page, and it was one before this subject existed. What changed is not the quality sought, it is the number of readers who reward it.

An afternoon’s work

Take your five most visited pages. For each, add a three-sentence paragraph at the top that answers directly the question the page addresses, before any elaboration.

Turn declarative subheadings into questions where it reads naturally: "Our timescales" becomes "How long does installation take". Check that every figure quoted carries a source and a date.

That is all, and it is enough for the stage we are at. Go round again in six months: if the curve in the first chart continues, this will have become routine and you will have started before your competitors.

One last thing, valid whatever this channel’s future: each of these fixes improves the page for a human reader in a hurry. That is what makes the bet lossless. If the curve in the first chart stops tomorrow, you will still have pages that are clearer, better structured and better sourced than before.

A last word on cadence: redo this twice a year, not monthly. Pages take time to be reassessed, and a business rewriting its five main pages every quarter spends its time erasing the signal it has just sent.
