Cameras: the field decides, not the resolution
A camera covering too wide a field recognises nobody, whatever its definition. What decides is the place it covers and the hour it gets judged at.
The security article has already ranked this line: a camera answers "what happened", after the fact, and it comes fourth. We are not reopening that ranking.
This page handles what the ranking does not say: why a correctly mounted installation, with recent equipment, still produces unusable images on the day they are needed.
The answer nearly always comes down to three things, and none of them is the camera’s definition. The field covered, the light at the moment that matters, and the recorder — which is this page’s critical device long before the camera is.
We add a fourth subject specific to this country and absent from most documentation: the physical place the camera sits in, the dust, heat and water it will take there, and the rating that genuinely corresponds to that place.
A camera answers one question, afterwards
The limit has to be restated once, briefly, because everything else on the page depends on it: a camera prevents nothing and reliably alerts nobody. It records, and it records after.
That has a direct consequence for what to ask of it: the only thing that matters is that a recording from a specific day, at a specific hour, shows what needs to be seen. Everything else is comfort.
The second thing it does, and this is real, is deter opportunistic intrusion. That effect does not depend on image quality: it depends on the camera being visible, which is almost the opposite of what an installer proposes when aiming to be discreet.
That creates an explicit decision for the director rather than the technician: do you want to deter, or do you want to record? The visible camera deters; the discreet one records better because it is not the first thing torn down.
In practice the right answer is almost always mixed: visible cameras where deterrence is wanted, and one camera covering the visible cameras, placed elsewhere and not announced by a recognisable housing.
The field decides, not the resolution
This is the page’s sentence. A camera has only a finite number of points, and that number is spread across whatever it looks at. The wider the field, the fewer points per metre — and points per metre is what decides whether a face is recognisable.
One camera covering a whole yard gives an image in which you can see that something happened. Two cameras each covering an entrance give an image in which you can see who. That is not a budget question, it is a question of distributing the same budget.
The method we apply is a drawing, not a catalogue: on the floor plan, mark the three or four unavoidable passing points — the front door, the gate, the till, the loading bay — and put one tightly framed camera on each.
What stays outside the field after that exercise is acceptable, because an intruder coming in necessarily passes one of those points. Covering the surface rather than the passages is the mistake that produces the most eight-camera installations with no recognition at all.
There is one exception to know: areas where you want to understand a sequence rather than recognise a person — a warehouse, a workshop, a production room. There the wide field is justified, and it is the only case where it is.
Night is the real test
Nearly every installation is signed off during the day, and nearly every event that justifies a camera happens at night. It is this page’s most expensive mismatch and it is entirely avoidable.
What changes at night is not only the amount of light. The camera switches to night mode, the image goes monochrome, the infrared illumination comes on, and motion sensitivity changes completely. It is a different camera.
Three faults appear only in that mode. The infrared reflects off glass, a nearby pale wall or a gutter, and washes out the whole image. Insects drawn to the infrared cross in front of the lens and trigger recordings all night. And a light source in the field — a streetlamp, a shop sign — saturates the sensor and makes everything else black.
The check is simple and nobody runs it: come back at ten in the evening, on an ordinary day, and look at each camera. What can be fixed that evening — an angle, a shade, a ten-centimetre move — cannot be once the installer has gone.
The line to write into the quotation is this: handover done at night, or a second night visit included in the price. It is a line that costs almost nothing and that we have never seen offered unprompted.
Backlight ruins more images than night does
The commonest fault we find is not nocturnal, it is daytime: a camera placed facing a glazed door, a gate open onto the street, or a south-facing window.
The mechanism is optical and has no complete software solution: the sensor adapts to the brightest area of the field. If the background is a rectangle of full sun, everything in front of it becomes a black silhouette — which is to say exactly the person you wanted to identify.
It is particularly present here, because outdoor light is strong for much of the year and many shops have a fully glazed front. A camera at the back of the shop pointing at the entrance is the commonest installation and the least usable.
The correction is a move, not a purchase: place the camera on the same side as the light source, filming inwards rather than towards the door. An angle of forty-five degrees from the entrance gives a lit face and a dark background, which is the exact reverse.
When moving is impossible, cameras designed for those light ranges exist and they cost more. That is the only place on this page where we recommend paying more for a specification — and only after checking that no angle solved it for nothing.
Outdoors: the rating matches the place
An outdoor camera carries a standardised ingress protection rating, written on its sheet, and that rating gets chosen by the place rather than by the word "outdoor". It is the one specification on this page that has to be read carefully.
The international standard describes two protections with a pair of digits: the first for solid bodies, therefore dust, the second for water. The three levels that concern a business installation are in the table alongside, and the difference between them is a place, not a quality.
The mistake we meet most is not under-protecting against rain: it is under-protecting against washing. A yard, a loading bay, a workshop or a shopfront cleaned with a hose put the camera in conditions no downpour reproduces, and a camera rated for splashes does not survive.
The second mistake belongs to the climate and it is not in the table: heat and dust. A camera in full sun on a south wall ages fast, and a camera in a dusty environment has its window fogged within months — producing exactly the blurred image blamed on the camera when what it needs is a cloth.
The practical consequence is a routine rather than a purchase: cleaning the windows, written down in the same place as the pillar’s other six-monthly checks. It is two minutes per camera and it separates a three-year-old installation from a three-year-old unusable one.

The recorder is the critical device
Quotations, comparisons and conversations are about the cameras. The device that genuinely decides the installation’s worth is the recorder, and it gets treated as an accessory.
Three reasons. It holds the images, so it is what gets carried away during a theft — and an installation with its recorder sitting in plain view in the stockroom was designed to prove nothing.
It is what fills up, and its behaviour when full is never checked: either it overwrites the oldest, which is correct, or it stops, which is much less so and happens with badly made configurations.
And it is what nobody has ever tried to extract a sequence from. A third party’s request for a recording — insurer, authority, lawyer — comes in a specific format, and an installation from which nobody has ever exported a minute discovers the problem at the worst moment.
The three corrections fit in a sentence each. The recorder in a locked room, not in the room it films. A copy of the important sequences elsewhere, like any data in the pillar. And an extraction tested once, in front of you, at handover.
How many days to keep
Retention is the only setting on this page with two opposing constraints, and it is nearly always left at the factory value.
The first constraint is practical: a night-time theft is discovered the next morning, but missing stock or a till discrepancy is discovered at stocktake, which is weeks later. Seven days is useless for half a camera’s real uses.
The second constraint runs the other way and the family article sets it: what you record about people is kept for a decided and limited period, not indefinitely. An undecided period is not a long period, it is an absence of decision.
Between the two, the value that works for most shops and workshops we equip sits around three to four weeks: enough to cover a monthly stocktake, short enough to remain a period that is owned and written down.
The technical point that follows from that choice, and that has to be checked before buying: disk capacity has to be calculated for that period, with the number of cameras and recording mode chosen. A recorder sized for eight days does not become a three-week recorder because a setting was changed.
Viewing remotely, and what that opens
Viewing from a phone is the function people like most and it introduces the most risk, because it turns a closed system into one reachable from outside.
The mechanism is the same as for any equipment in this pillar: a recorder reachable from the internet with its factory password is a recorder other people can view. Business cameras publicly accessible are not a hypothesis, they are a known category.
Three rules suffice and they are the switch page’s. Change the administrative password at installation and record it in the access inventory. Do not open the recorder directly onto the internet, but go through the manufacturer’s service or a controlled remote access. And apply the manufacturer’s updates, which are rare and often fix exactly this problem.
A fourth rule belongs to this equipment: cameras and recorder live on a separate network, as the network article says. They are numerous, they are rarely updated, and they only need to talk to the recorder.
And a remark about use rather than security: remote viewing is useful occasionally and quickly becomes a habit of watching employees. That is not the same thing and it deserves being decided consciously rather than discovered by the people concerned.
Power, and the switch’s budget
A network camera is powered by its cable, which removes the need for a socket at height and accounts for most of the installation saving. It is also what makes it dependent on equipment described elsewhere.
The page on switches gives the figure that matters: the power available per port depends on the generation of the standard, and a switch’s overall budget is almost always below the sum of its ports. We do not repeat it here, we draw its consequence.
The consequence is a symptom to recognise, because it does not look like a power problem: the cameras work while there are few of them, then one restarts on its own, always around the same time of day, when the others are drawing most.
The cameras that draw most are the ones heating their window, the ones that pan, and the ones with powerful infrared illumination — which is to say precisely the outdoor cameras, in winter, at night. The worst moment coincides with the moment they are useful.
So the purchasing rule is to add up the real consumption stated by the manufacturer rather than counting cameras, and to keep a margin. It is the same rule as for ports, and it fails the same way: nobody checks it because everything works on installation day.
What to check at handover
A surveillance installation gets signed off badly because it looks as though it works: the images appear, everybody is satisfied, and nobody tests what it exists for.
Five checks, performed in front of the installer before they leave. The first is framing with somebody standing: ask a person to stand at the passing point, and see whether you would recognise them without knowing who it is.
The second is extraction: ask for a ten-minute sequence from yesterday, exported to a file, opened on your own machine. That is section 5’s test and it fails more often than people expect.
The third is filling up: ask what happens when the disk is full and have it written down. The fourth is the outage: deliberately cut the power and see what comes back on its own, in what order, and how long it takes.
The fifth is section 3’s and it needs a second visit: the night check, at ten in the evening. If only one of the five can be kept when the budget is tight, it is that one — because it is the only one that tests the real conditions.
What a camera will not prove
This page has to close on limits, because an installation handed over without them reads as a guarantee and is not one.
It will not prove an identity if the field was wide, if the person wore a hood, or if the image is at night with no light. It will prove somebody was there, at that hour, doing that thing — which is often enough, but it is not the same thing.
It will prove nothing about what happened outside the field, and outside the field is vast: the stockroom, the back yard, the office, and everything that happens while the person has their back turned. An incident is rarely reconstructed from images alone.
It will prove nothing about what has been erased, and erasure is almost always the consequence of too short a retention period rather than of malice. That is section 6, and it is the commonest limit in practice.
And it will replace none of the three free steps the family article puts before it. A business with excellent images and a backup that has never been restored has bought proof of an event it will not be able to survive.
What we do, and what we will refuse to do
What we will refuse: installing a camera that covers a surface rather than a passing point, because that is the installation that produces eight cameras and no recognition, and because it sells better.
We will refuse to sign off an installation without a night check and without an extraction tested in front of you. An installation accepted in daylight is one tested in the conditions where it will not be used.
We will refuse to place a recorder in the room it films, and to open its remote viewing while its factory password has not been changed and recorded in your access inventory.
What we do: the passing points drawn before any quotation; framing checked with somebody standing in the field; the angle chosen against backlight before proposing a more expensive camera; the protection rating chosen by the real place, washing included; retention decided and the disk sized for it; consumption added up rather than cameras counted; and section 9’s five checks done before the installer leaves.
And what you can do tonight without us: walk past your cameras at ten in the evening and look at the live images. Then ask to see a recording from three weeks ago. Those two acts take ten minutes and will tell you what you actually bought.

Should we choose the highest resolution?
No: what decides is the field. The same number of points spread across a whole yard recognises nobody. Put one tightly framed camera on each unavoidable passing point rather than one covering the surface.
