Before the works

A cracked cement render that sounded hollow, bare brick under the window sills, rusty metal shutters stuck half open and black streaks under every balcony.

What was done

A scaffold went up on the street side with a safety net for passers-by. All the render that sounded hollow was hacked off, broken bricks replaced and the cracks treated before a single coat.

The render was redone in hydraulic lime, in two passes, with a waterproofer in the body coat: lime lets the wall dry out and does not crack the way the old, over-stiff cement render did.

The windows were replaced with aluminium sliders and the rusty shutters with blue aluminium louvres. A stabiliser and two coats of white façade paint finished the job.
