What the law says
CAT-NAT cover has been compulsory since 2003

Since the Boumerdès earthquake, the law requires every owner of a building, and every commercial or industrial business for its premises, to insure against natural disasters: earthquake, flood and mudslide, storm and ground movement.
The price depends on the value insured and on how exposed the wilaya is to earthquakes and floods. Going uninsured means a fine and losing the compensation provided after a disaster.
At Hima, CAT-NAT cover is in every plan. Tenants insure their belongings and their liability to the landlord.
A general summary: it replaces neither the law itself nor the terms of your contract.
Questions
Your questions, answered.
I rent: do I need insurance?
The lease almost always requires it: you answer for damage you could cause to the home — fire, water — and you protect your own belongings. The quote adapts to tenants.
How do I value my building?
Declare a rebuilding value, not a sale price: what it would cost to build again, without the land. An adviser at a branch can help you estimate it.
What exactly does CAT-NAT cover?
Direct material damage caused by an earthquake, a flood or mudslide, a storm or severe wind, and ground movement, once the authorities have declared a natural disaster.
Is my jewellery covered against theft?
With valuables cover, yes, up to the limit you choose and provided you declare it. Without it, theft cover applies to the everyday contents of the home.
Should I insure a second home?
Yes — CAT-NAT applies to every building. A home left empty part of the year is declared as such to your adviser.
How soon am I paid after water damage?
Report the claim with a few photos. For small damage the assessment can be done remotely and the offer usually arrives within days; you follow each step in your account.
