Anatomy of a frame

A frame, part by part.

Scroll, and the frame comes apart into its pieces. Three numbers are engraved inside its temple, and they say most of what there is to know about its size.

The workshop

Nothing leaves without going across the bench.

Every frame is opened, checked and reassembled in Béjaïa before it is packed. Lenses are cut here, on our own machines, by the two opticians who run the workshop. It is slower than a fulfilment centre, and it is the reason a fault almost never reaches you.

The journey of a lens

Six steps, all of them in the workshop.

  1. The workshop late in the afternoon: the optician checks a pair under the lamp, her colleague at the edger behind her

    Your prescription and your frame reach the bench with the order.

  2. The optician reads a lens on the measuring instrument, one eye at the eyepiece

    Sphere, cylinder, axis, pupillary distance. If one is missing, the order stops and we call.

  3. The benchworker loads a lens blank into the edger

    Cut

    The lens is chosen to your correction, in the index you picked.

  4. The bevel of a freshly edged lens, held between two fingers

    The edger gives it the exact shape of the rim, bevel included.

    The lens goes into the warmed acetate, then the pair is read again and adjusted.

Delivery

The price changes with the province.

A single flat rate loses money on the far provinces and overcharges the near ones. Each zone carries its own price and its own lead time, shown before the basket.

We do not deliver to nine southern provinces. They are named rather than hidden.

    Which frame for a round face?

    The useful rule is one sentence: look for contrast. An angular frame gives a round face structure; a round frame doubles it. The rest is proportion, and thirty seconds in front of a mirror settles it.

    What an anti-reflective coating actually does

    It protects you from nothing. It increases the light that passes through the lens instead of bouncing off it — which makes your eyes visible to other people and tires them less in the evening. It is not a filter, and nobody should sell it to you as one.
