Breathe: eucalyptus in the hammam and at home

Its branches scent our treatment rooms and the hammam steam. Sabrina shares simple ways to use eucalyptus, and where to stop.

If you have visited us, you know the scent. A eucalyptus branch hangs in every shower in the hammam, and the steam releases its fresh smell as soon as the hot water runs. It is one of the most familiar plants in Algerian homes, from the hills of the Mitidja to the Tell.

In the hammam

In humid heat, eucalyptus gives a feeling of fuller breathing. We use fresh branches, never essential oil poured straight onto the stones, which is far too concentrated for a shared space. Eucalyptus black soap carries the feeling on into the scrub.

For a massage, one or two drops of essential oil diluted in a spoonful of plant oil are plenty. Neat, it irritates the skin; too much, and it gives you a headache rather than helping you relax.

There are several species of eucalyptus, and they are not equally suited to the skin. The one you see everywhere in Algeria, blue gum, is the richest in cooling compounds, and also the strongest. For children’s skin or sensitive skin, the gentler narrow-leaved eucalyptus is preferred. Either way, choose an oil with its Latin name on the bottle, and keep it away from light.

At home

The simplest idea: hang a few fresh branches from your shower head. The steam does the rest for a week or two. You can also put a sprig in a room, or breathe gently over a bowl of hot water with your eyes closed.

A few limits, finally. Eucalyptus essential oil is not recommended for pregnant women, young children or people with asthma without medical advice. It does not replace any treatment. With us it remains what it is: a scent that invites you to slow down and breathe more slowly.
